This metaphor might seem a bit mixed, but bear with me. The language is like the cooked rice - you want to keep it warm, even if you're not currently adding anything to it. Otherwise, it might get cold, or, to push the metaphor further, "die". Of course, food doesn't really die, but you get the idea - languages need to be kept alive, even when not actively studied.
