The Dark Side of Duolingo and Streaks

Hi Language Buddy!

I want to discuss the dark side of gamification in language learning. While I don't have much personal experience with gamification, as I'm not a heavy user of apps like Duolingo and don't obsess over streaks or competing with others, I've observed some negative consequences of gamification among language learners.

I've witnessed at least three people maintain their Duolingo streaks for an extended period, sometimes well over a year. However, when something unexpected occurs, such as a change in time zones, a missed day, or an illness, they lose their streak and become demotivated. In some cases, they even stop learning the language entirely due to the loss of their streak.

My plea to you is this: please don't be one of these people. Ensure that your reasons for learning a language go beyond competing with others or maintaining a streak. Don't lose sight of your end goal.

If you think you might be prone to becoming overly fixated on gamification, I'd suggest not engaging in that aspect of language learning in the first place. However, if you do lose your streak, remember that there's more to life and language learning than maintaining a streak. Your motivation for learning a language should extend beyond simply competing with others or using an app.

In conclusion, while gamification can be a helpful tool for some language learners, it's essential to recognize its potential drawbacks and keep your focus on your true goals and motivations for learning a language. Happy studying!
