Language Skills Regressing? Don't Panic!

Hi Language Buddy!

I'm feeling inspired to explore a topic that hits home for many of us: the ups and downs of the language learning journey. Specifically, I want to delve into the concept that language acquisition isn't a smooth, linear progression - it's more like a mathematical step function. Now, stick with me on this, even if you're not a math whiz. A step function starts at one level, then suddenly jumps to another level, continuing on from that higher plane. And friends, language learning is exactly like this.

I know we've grazed this concept before, but it's worth repeating. There are times in our journey where it feels like we're not just stagnating, but regressing. One day, you're chatting away in Russian, impressing everyone, including yourself, with your fluency. You feel on top of the world. Then, a week later, after the same amount of study, you find yourself stumbling over words and forgetting phrases. You're left wondering, "What happened?"

The truth is, this ebb and flow is completely normal. Why? I'm not entirely sure - there's likely a psycholinguistic explanation behind it, but I can say from personal experience, having learned many languages myself, it's a natural part of the process. It's much like the phenomenon of undertows at sea. When caught in one, the current seems to drag you back before you can move forward. While it's far from a perfect metaphor, it does capture the essence of what we're dealing with here.

Now, on those rough days, it's crucial to remember: don't panic. Just like an undertow, the regression you feel is temporary. Keep pushing on, and eventually, your skill level will take another leap forward. Trust me, I've been there enough times to know that it's just part of the ride.

So, if you're in one of those phases where you feel like you're sliding backward, despite putting in the work, I urge you to stay calm. Don't let it derail you. It's not only normal, but expected. I may not know the scientific reason behind it, but I've lived it enough times to confirm it's a thing - and it's a thing you shouldn't be afraid of.
